This huge hit Broadway musical, which opened at the Gershwin Theater on Oct 30, 2003, celebrates its thirtieth Anniversary soon. Directed by Joe Mantello and Choreographed by Wayne Cilento, the show has a sense of wit, and is written as a prequel to the popular ‘Wizard of Oz.’ This well-written book by Winnie Holzman is so well-directed that it fully justifies the Wicked ticket prices. If you are an admirer of Oz, this extravaganza of music and theatrics on Broadway will be irresistible. The delightful musical score, the lavishly decorated sets, and the creative direction cast a wonderful spell of suspense and laughter.

The cast is steeped in talent. Rarely does one see two actors, or actresses – in this case – perform in a show-stopping manner. Wicked is one of those rare ‘must see’ productions, with performances that are splendid, to say the least, and the visual production as dazzling as could be. No wonder, you need to book your tickets quite in advance, and no wonder, it has completed three years of continuous running.
The hit Broadway musical is said to be “the most complete, and completely satisfying, new musical” which will make you laugh, cry and think for all the right reasons.

This spectacular production takes us into the lives of Elphaba Thropp, the intellectual green-skinned student who later becomes known as the Wicked Witch of the West, and Galinda Upland, the beautiful and ever-so-popular girl who later becomes Glinda the Good. The two are thrown together when they are forced to be roommates at Shiz University. At first, they absolutely despise one another, but through the course of the show, they begin to develop a friendship despite sharing the same love interest, very drastic personalities, and different views of the world. The story creates the idea that Elphaba was not wicked at all but misunderstood because she was different, not only in her physical appearance but in her approach to certain situations. She was not afraid to speak her mind or stand up for what she believed in. Her infamous reputation was created by a powerful wizard who sought to use Elphaba for his own intentions.
In its first season, Wicked was nominated for ten Tony Awards and took home three including Best Actress and Best Costume Design. While it was nominated for Best Musical it lost to the other new musical of that year, Avenue Q. The score was written by Stephen Schwartz who also wrote the music and lyrics for the 1971 classic Godspell which earned him two Grammy Awards. The cast recording of Wicked won the 2005 Grammy Award for Best Musical Show Album.
In its first year, Wicked Broadway tickets grossed more than $56 million. In January of 2006, it broke the record for the highest weekly box office gross in Broadway history surpassing the record previously held by The Producers. In March of that same year, the Broadway production celebrated its 1000th performance. Production seems to be going just as strong five years later and is showing no signs of slowing down. It is still one of the hottest tickets on Broadway!
While Wicked is based on a familiar story, it can still be considered a whole new idea. It gives the audience a different view of some of the characters they thought they knew so well. With its witty dialogue, powerful music, and amazing costumes, Wicked is a fantastic production to watch. At times the audience is mesmerized by the story that is unfolding before them. Throughout the musical, there are several twists and surprises that make for great discussions afterward. Wicked is a fun and intriguing tale that raises many questions, and lets the viewer see Oz in a whole new light!
Have you been doing your best, trying to find last-minute theater tickets for Wicked? You’re not the only one- despite raking in several divided reviews; the play has become a huge success not only on a national level but around the world as well.
Ever Wonder About the Witch?
People looking for last-minute theater tickets for Wicked are hoping to get a glimpse of a tale that shows us the other side of Oz. We all know the story of the Wizard of Oz and how Dorothy and her friends managed to rid the land of the Wicked Witch. But have you ever wondered what Oz was like before Dorothy came along? When the Wicked Witch of the West was melting, did you ever wonder how she became wicked in the first place?
These questions are precisely what the play Wicked looks at. For years, we’ve all seen Glinda as the good witch while the Witch of the West was just considered to be evil. This play takes us back to the beginning, before Glinda was good and when the Witch of the West was called Elphaba. In fact, Glinda and Elphaba were both good friends and Elphaba wasn’t as evil as you might know her to be.
Was Glinda Really Good?
Last-minute theater tickets for Wicked will take you on an extraordinary journey, which reveals that Glinda the Good Witch certainly had her less-than-good side. Furthermore, Elphaba was perhaps more a victim of circumstance than anything else. Elphaba is hardly a popular girl in university and is shunned because of her green skin. She does, however, have a talent for magic and Madam Morrible who notices this, promises to introduce her to the Wizard of Oz who might have use for her magic.
Meanwhile, animosity grows between Glinda who is popular and glamorous and Elphaba. Glinda gives Elphaba a black pointed cap but when the latter shows up with it at the ballroom dance, everybody laughs. Glinda feels guilty and joins Elphaba who is all alone on the dance floor. A friendship is born between the two, but it becomes very strained when the boy Elphaba falls in love with goes for Glinda instead. On top of that, Elphaba knows that the Wizard of Oz is corrupt and launches a lonely crusade to stop him. Glinda refuses to join her because she doesn’t want to lose her popularity. But everything ends well – the audience learns that Elphaba did not really die. With tickets to Wicked, we see that she gets really reunited with the man she loves and the two leave the Land of Oz.
