Radio City Music Hall was the brainchild of John D. Rockefeller, Jr., who along with his commercial partner, the Radio Corporation of America, built what was to become the ‘largest indoor theater in the world.’ It was built to offer high-quality entertainment at affordable prices, prices that ordinary people could afford. The interior design was done by a relatively unknown interior designer, Donald Deskey. Making art an integral part of the design, his artists created murals, sculptures, and wall coverings, and he designed more than ‘thirty separate spaces, including eight lounges and smoking rooms, each with its own motif.’

The Restoration
This great legacy from 1932, faded over time, with the spectacular interiors becoming dull with age. Gradually, everything lost its charm, and it took seven months in 1999 and over $70 million to restore it back to its earlier glory. Prior to its comprehensive restoration, its original interiors were carefully researched to bring it back to its original splendor.
To obtain clues about the design of the original Hall, the research included poring through historical archives, old photos, and newspaper clippings. The company that made the original seating recreated the seating in the auditorium. Carpets and draperies were rewoven in original patterns and colors. The neon marquee, which is a whole city block long, has been restored to its original glory.
The result of such meticulous restoration is there for all to see. No wonder, the venue is the Showplace of the Nation.
Best Seats in the Radio City Music Hall
This venue was originally built for an intimate experience with big sound. You can make your way around and find the best seats. Some seats are better than others, but at the end of the day as long as you are in the interior of seats your experience will be amazing. If you do get an upper balcony location, seek the middle stage for the best seating. Sound will be ideal in the location geared in the center. At the end of the day, the best seat will come down to who is performing and what kind of budget you have.
The Showplace of The Nation
Since it first opened its doors on Dec 27, 1932, popular entertainers of the day, such as Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald, Sammy Davis Jr., and Tony Bennett, among many others, have thrilled the audience at Radio City Music Hall. Today, after the restoration, the stars of the modern era, from the worlds of entertainment, sports, the media, and national life, are attracted to the great stage of the Hall.
Radio City has hosted Grammy and Tony awards, the MTV Video Music and the ESPY Awards, and TIME Magazine’s celebration of its 75th year, among others.
The Tickets
With the variety of events held at Radio City that attract top celebrities, tickets for all events and shows are always sold out in advance and are at a premium. For most events, tickets must be booked months in advance, and there are no chances of purchasing tickets from the venue at the last moment.
