The Jets began their existence as the New York Titans in 1960, as a charter member of the American Football League, and played their home games at the Polo Grounds. This was their home from 1960 to 1963. The Titans never did well and were heading for bankruptcy. They were saved by a group headed by Music Corporation of America (MCA) head Sonny Werblin, and Leon Hess, who bought the team from Harry Wismer on March 13, 1964. They renamed the team the New York Jets and planned to move from the Polo grounds.
Leon Hess eventually bought out his partners and took over the Jets. In 2000, his estate sold the team to Robert Wood Johnson IV, heir of Johnson & Johnson.
From 1964 to 1983, the Jets made their home at Shea Stadium. Here, the Jets played three playoff games:
The 1968 American Football League (AFL) Championship, beating the Oakland Raiders, 27-23.
The 1969 AFL Divisional playoff, losing 13-6 to the Kansas City Chiefs.
The 1981 American Football Conference (AFC) wild card playoff game, losing 31-27 to the Buffalo Bills.
The Jets’ move to Shea Stadium, and the signing of the now legendary Joe Namath in 1965 for an annual salary worth $427,000, turned their fortunes around. The New York Jets tickets became the most popular team nationwide and drew audiences at home and away.
In 1984, the Jets made the Giants Stadium their new home, though they insist on calling it ‘The Meadowlands.’ With a new stadium – New Meadowlands Stadium – expected to come up by 2010, the Jets along with the Giants will be moving base there. Presently, the Jets are training at Hofstra University in Hempstead, NY on Long Island, and by 2008, will be shifting their training facilities to Florham Park, NJ.
The Retired Numbers
To honor their great players, the Jets have retired the following three jersey numbers, never to be worn again. These are:
#12 – Joe Namath
#13 – Don Maynard
#73 – Joe Kleck
Since his career-ending injury in 1992, Dennis Byrd’s jersey number 90, though not retired officially, has not been issued.
Best Seats in MetLife Stadium
As we mentioned above it will be up to you when it comes to finding the best seat. It comes down to timing and how much you want to spend on tickets. The best seats are never cheap and that will always be the case. Look for tickets after a loss or better yet on the latter side of a losing streak. Obviously, if the Jets are playing well and are in contention you are going to have a much hard time. Don’t let the numbers stop you. Look for seats behind the endzone or on the side of the opponents. You can save a little bit in these sections.
There are plenty of great seats you can choose from if the money is there. Think about a budget that works for you and then figure out the game you want to attend. Look around different sections and then look for rows that are back a few. If you can get a front-row seat in a deeper section this may be worth it. Good luck with the game and if you have any questions about getting the best New York Jets seats, please feel free to leave us a note.
