There were no events found for Mary Poppins.Mary Poppins literally blows into the Banks home with an easterly wind and simply states that she will stay until the wind changes. That gives her just enough time to help this family fix what is wrong. She teaches the children to behave a little better and helps the parents realize that their children truly do need them. When all of this is accomplished, she once again blows out of their lives, with the westerly wind, taking her umbrella and magic carpet bag with her. She leaves the Banks family knowing they are much happier than when she first arrived.
The musical features the original Academy Award-winning songs written by the Sherman brothers for the film including such classics as “Feed the Birds” and “A Spoonful of Sugar”. This production also includes a few new songs including “Practically Perfect” and additional music by the writing team of George Stiles and Anthony Drewe. The original cast starred Ashley Brown in the title role and Gavin Lee as Bert. Both actors have recently vacated their roles to star in the national tour of the show. Prior to the Broadway premiere, the London production had experienced fantastic reviews and has received several prestigious awards some of which are the 2005 Olivier Awards for Best Theatre Choreography and Leading Actress in a Musical.
The film version starred Julie Andrews, in her film debut, as the extraordinary nanny and Dick Van Dyke in the role of Bert. In true Disney fashion, the movie featured an animated sequence bringing together the actors and cartoon characters to sing the classic “Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious”. The film also included an intriguing dance routine, set on the rooftops of London, to the song “Step in Time”. A group of chimney sweepers along with Bert, Mary, and the children not only danced from rooftop to rooftop but also climbed a set of stairs formed completely out of chimney smoke. Scenes such as these made this movie an unforgettable tradition in many households through the years.
After experiencing the film, theatergoers can appreciate the Broadway potential for this story. This is something parents and children can enjoy together. And, given Disney’s recent success on Broadway with The Lion King and The Little Mermaid the audience can only expect that Mary Poppins, The New Musical will not disappoint!
