The Story
While these huge names have generated buzz along Broadway as well as the score or really set list there is more. The Million Dollar Quartet review for the Broadway production is very positive. Perhaps the most fascinating and intriguing part of the musical is its backdrop. The storyline is about one night in which the legendary producer Sam Phillips could get each of the singers he found back to his Sun Records studio for a recording session.
Most pop and rock music scholars are aware of Mr. Phillips, his storefront Memphis studio, the talent he discovered as well as the memorable hit songs he produced. He has coined the name the “Father of Rock ‘n’ Roll,” and those that were unaware will certainly have understanding after watching. The recording session would later come to be considered one of the greatest jam sessions in the entire history of music.
The Million Dollar Quartet review then goes on with the story. The musical production covers the hit songs of each artist while telling a narrative story behind each hit song. Sam Phillips’s character played by Brian McCaskill breaks from the songs to tell of how he discovered each of the singers and where their careers went after he was no longer recording them.
The viewer can enjoy the great songs as well as get insight into the history of the singers, musical styles, and genres they covered. Currently, each of these artists was quite different and in their prime and all four were at a point of great creative experimentation within their music. No doubt fans of music and especially any fans of these artists will learn something new and be greatly entertained.
The cast for the Million Dollar Quartet review is a wonderful delight. Each is making its Broadway musical debuts, but one would never suspect they were not Broadway veterans. Their acting is top-notch but more impressive are their musical talents. Each plays their own instruments with confidence, skill, and passion, which brings the show alive with Rock ‘N’ Roll energy one would hope to get from the show. Songs include Blue Suede Shoes,” “Fever,” “Sixteen Tons,” and “Who Do You Love?” “Great Balls of Fire,” “Riders in the Sky,” “I Walk the Line,” “Folsom Prison Blues,” and “Whole Lotta’ Shakin’ Goin’ On.”
Eric Schaeffer is handling the director’s seat for the production which features a book by Colin Escott and Floyd Mutrux. Chuck Mead is behind all the musical arrangements and supervision. The great cast includes Lance Guest as Johnny Cash, Levi Kreis as Jerry Lee Lewis, Rob Lyons as Carl Perkins, Eddie Glendening as Elvis Presley, and Brian McCaskill as Sam Phillips. If looking for a Million Dollar Quartet review wondering if this is a musical that you must see it will come down to if you love the music, the singers, and stories backdrop. If the answer is yes to any of those questions, then you are sure to find great entertainment and even some education in this exciting new Broadway musical.
