MEL BROOKS BREATHES LIFE INTO A CLASSIC!

Three time Tony award winner Mel Brooks’s hilarious take on the Mary Shelley classic comes to life this November at the Hilton Theatre. After a successful six year run of The Producers the same creative team brings another comedy to New York. Young Frankenstein is based on the hit 1974 film of the same name starring Gene Wilder, who also wrote the screenplay, Teri Garr and the late Peter Boyle as the monster. A mad scientist, a bizarre creature, an unsightly sidekick and a sexy lab assistant all contribute to a comedy that can’t miss.

Set in the gothic Castle Frankenstein and the foggy scenery of Transylvania Heights the production takes on a life of its own. Much to his surprise Frederick Frankenstein, the respected New York brain surgeon and professor, inherits his deranged grandfathers castle and lab in Transylvania. He must now decide whether to run from his tortured past or stay and continue to carry out his grandfather’s experiments of bringing the dead back to life. Frederick is tempted to continue the late, disturbed geniuses work and feels he could prove successful. But, as with any good comedy complications and mix ups arise especially with the choice of brains he decides to use for the reanimation of the dead experiment doesn’t quite work out. In the process he falls in love with his assistant Inga, deals with an angry mob and somewhere along the way he realizes that the meaning of life isn’t exactly what he originally thought it was.

The score was written by Brooks who reunited with three time Tony award winner and The Producers lyricist Thomas Meehan to create sheer theatrical magic. The songs include “The Transylvania Mania,” “He Vas My Boyfriend” and an unforgettable rendition of “Putting on the Ritz.” The show is directed and choreographed by The Producers Susan Stroman. This impressive creative team along with the skilled ensemble has the making for a brilliant production. Tony award winner Roger Bart leads the cast as Frederick. In 1999 he earned both critical acclaim and a Tony for his role as Snoopy in You’re A Good Man, Charlie Brown. He also originated the role of Carmen Ghia in The Producers opposite Nathan Lane and Matthew Broderick. Sutton Foster plays the role of Inga the vivacious lab assistant. In 2002 she won the Tony for her role as Millie in Thoroughly Modern Millie. She last appeared on Broadway in 2006 in The Drowsy Chaperone. Megan Mullally stars as Elizabeth. She is probably best known for her award winning role as Karen Walker on the long running hit sitcom Will and Grace. In 1994, Mullally made her Broadway debut as Marty in the revival of Grease.

Young Frankenstein is a parody to the horror genre especially those 1930’s Universal films about the creature. The show is quite entertaining and in true Mel Brooks fashion there are several inside jokes and much witty dialogue. It is a spoof that takes an interesting twist. This show is a definite must see for the fall season.
