WORLD WAR II COMEDY PAYS HOMAGE TO THE THEATRE!

The Manhattan Theatre Club kicks off its 2008/2009 season with this intriguing limited engagement black comedy. To Be or Not To Be begins previews at the Samuel J. Friedman Theatre (formerly the Biltmore Theatre) on September 11, 2008 with an official start date of October 2, 2008. Nick Whitby’s new play is based on the 1942 film of the same name and pays tribute to the theatre while telling a very funny tale in the process.

This WW II era comedy is set in 1939 Warsaw and focuses on a smash hit theatre troupe. When the troupe’s new show is shut down by censures and replaced with Hamlet during the German invasion they face dire times. All of that changes when a young bomber pilot enlists their help to catch a spy. With the group of actors on board with his plans to stop the spy from reaching Germany the chaos and the mayhem begin creating one hilarious set of circumstances after another.

The production is based on the controversial 1942 film starring Jack Benny, Carole Lombard and Robert Stack which was released during the height of the American involvement in the war. The show stars two-time Tony Award nominee Jan Maxwell in the role of Maria. Maxwell’s extensive theater credits include roles in City of Angels, The Dinner Party and last years Coram Boy for which she was nominated for a Tony Award. In the role of Josef opposite Maxwell is David Rasche. He has appeared in MTC’s world premiere Regrets Only and his Broadway credits include Speed-the-Plow, Getting and Spending and The Shadow Box. He has also had recurring roles on All My Children and Nurses. The show also features Peter Benson, Robert Dorfman and Peter Maloney.

The Manhattan Theatre Club with its talented ensemble always puts on a very well crafted and believable production; To Be or Not To Be is no exception. Get your To Be Or Not To Be tickets soon as this show is on a limited run and is scheduled to close on November 23, 2008.
