WHAT’S HAPPENING … BROADWAY! December 2008
Why not ring in the New Year with a trip to NYC? There are plenty of fun and exciting shows scheduled to open once the ball drops. Once the holiday stress is over take some time for yourself and indulge in a show!
Still can’t let go of the Christmas season? There is still time to catch two holiday classics before the magic ends! Irvin Berlin’s White Christmas is scheduled to close on January 4, 2009 and the Rockettes will stop high kicking in this year’s production of The Radio City Christmas Spectacular on New Years Eve.
Starting off 2009 are several must see productions that are sure to delight and entertain audiences throughout the entire winter season. Beginning in January is a revival of Hedda Gabler starring Tony award winner Mary Louise Parker. This Roundabout Theatre presentation is on a limited engagement and is scheduled to run through March. If a comedy is more your thing then look no further then You’re Welcome America, A Final Night with George W. Bush starring the very funny and talented Will Ferrell. This one man show is scheduled to begin performances in mid-January and play through March 15, 2009.
Two anticipated musicals return to Broadway in February. Oliver Platt and Lauren Graham star in the revival of the classic Guys and Dolls which is scheduled to begin previews on February 3, 2009 at the Nederlander Theatre. Jumping ahead a decade or so is the lasting musical Hair which depicts the cultural movement of the 60’s told through the eyes of a group of hippies. This rocking revival is scheduled to begin on February 13, 2009 at the Al Hirschfeld Theatre giving a whole new generation a chance to experience the Age of Aquarius.
As the new openings filter in this season we can expect a few closings as well. If you were planning on catching any of the following shows now would be a good time to get your tickets. The Tony award winning Spamalot bids farewell on January 11, 2009. The current production stars American Idol runner up Clay Aiken in his return engagement until January 4, 2009. Audiences will also have to say goodbye to the beloved musical Gypsy. The Tony award winning revival will play its final performance on March 1, 2009. The show received seven Tony nods last year and stars stage legend and Tony award winning actress Patti Lupone. This is one you don’t want to miss and should take the opportunity to see it before it goes. Also scheduled to close in January are Young Frankenstein, Grease, Boeing-Boeing and 13, The Musical.
