The production on Broadway has a number of firsts. This is the first time playwright David Hare had a world premiere of one of his plays in the United States. This is also the first time the four-time Academy Award nominee – Julianne Moore – stars on a Broadway stage. This is her debut appearance; and so does Golden Globe nominee Bill Nighy debut on Broadway in the show.

The Vertical Hour previewed on November 9, 2006 at the Music Box Theater, and opened on November 30, 2006 to mixed reviews. Though the New York Post said it was one of the best plays Broadway had seen in years, others were not so impressed. Otherwise, this David Hare written and Sam Mendes directed play has been well accepted by the audiences.

This is a story about Nadia Blye; a young American war correspondent (in the mold of Christiane Amanpour) turned political science academic at Yale - played by Julianne Moore. A holiday with her boyfriend on the Welsh border brings her in touch with his estranged father – played superbly by Bill Nighy. Here she faces a different kind of battle zone – of cultural differences and beliefs.

As their debate on their personal belief progresses through the night, one senses ‘a growing, dangerous attraction between these opposite types.’ The former war correspondent is caught between the affections of her boyfriend and her boyfriend’s father – a surprising romantic triangle.

The Venue

The Vertical Hour is performing at Broadway’s Music Box Theater. The theater, designed by Architects C. Howard Crane and E. George Kiehler, was built by Irving Berlin - the now legendary composer and lyricist - and Sam H. Harris, to house revues. The theater, with a seating capacity of 1,010, opened in September 1921.

The theater has a neo-Classic façade that is fronted by four columns that support a porch. Within this elegant front is a classic Adamesque interior with fine plaster and paint work. The Music Box Theater, which today is jointly owned by the Shubert Organization and Irving Berlin’s estate, was designated a New York landmark in December 1987.
