Thus wrote New York Daily News when the play opened at the Cort Theater, “New comedies are uncommon on Broadway. New comedies that are actually funny are so rare that there ought to be an endangered-species list,” and “delivers two hours of delicious good fun.” The popular New York Times wrote of the play, “the tastiest homegrown comedy of manners to hit New York in years.” Could any comedy play opening on Broadway ask for more?
The Little Dog Laughed previewed at the Cort Theater on October 26, 2006 and opened on November 13, 2006 after performing the whole summer at the Off-Broadway theater, the Second Stage Theater, where it had a smash run.
Written by Douglas Carter Beane, directed by Scott Ellis, and with original music and sound by Lewis Flinn, The Little Dog Laughed is a spoof on Hollywood, deliciously acerbic, and an out and out delight to watch. The play is about Hollywood – offers a satirical look at the celebrities, the entanglements that snare rising Hollywood stars, and a hustler skulking around.
This is a story set in New York and Los Angeles. It is a story about a sly Hollywood agent (aren’t they all?), played by Julie White. It is a story about her client – a movie star on the rise, played by Tom Everett Scott. It is a story about a male prostitute – played by Johnny Galecki – whom the movie star falls for, and decides to come out of the closet. It is a hilarious story about the agent reminding her star that the fans like their stars straight, and plots a plan for a happy ending.
This playful look inside the world of Hollywood reflects our society that is so obsessed with celebrities, and has enough twists in the plot to keep everyone guessing.
The Venue
The Little Dog Laughed is playing at the Cort Theater. The theater opened on December 20, 1912, and was designed by architect Thomas W. Lamb for John Cort - a successful theater operator on the West Coast.
The design of the Cort Theater is based on Versailles’ Petit Trianon. It has a simple neoclassical exterior, and a dramatically detailed, lavish interior.
