ANTICIPATED LEGAL DRAMA!

Opening this fall at the Music Box Theatre is the new legal drama by the Emmy winning creator of televisions The West Wing. Aaron Sorkin’s new play, The Farnsworth Invention, begins previews on October 15, 2007 with an official start date of November 14, 2007. What may be this season’s most anticipated opening details the battle between a boy genius and the head of the Radio Corporation of America (RCA) over the patent for the television set. The production is making its move from California where it was recently seen in a LaJolla Playhouse workshop.

The play chronicles the bitter legal conflict between Philo T. Farnsworth, a genius who while in high school in 1927 invented the television set, and TV pioneer David Sarnoff the youngest president of RCA and America’s first communications mogul. The battle would later become known as one of the great and tragic examples of how an industrial corporation could bring down a rightful patent owner. The underlying theme of the play is the fact that these two men are not just fighting over a patent for the most influential invention of the 20th century but for their own honor and glory as well.

Both the cast and creator of this production make it a can’t miss event. Leading the ensemble in the role of Sarnoff is Tony nominated and Emmy winner Hank Azaria. Mr. Azaria is best known for his television roles in Huff and Mad About You and has voiced several characters in the current movie version of The Simpsons. He was last seen on Broadway in 2005 for his Tony nominated performance as Sir Lancelot in the popular production of Spamalot. This new American play was created by Aaron Sorkin his first stage work since A Few Good Men in 1989. He later adapted that play for the big screen directed by Rob Reiner and starred Tom Cruise, Jack Nicholson and Demi Moore in 1992. The film version gained much box office success. Sorkin also wrote the screen play for the films Malice and An American President. He is an Emmy winning, acclaimed writer with a talent so versatile that it allows him to create for television, movies and Broadway.

This powerful play tells the story of two very smart and capable men caught in a winner take all battle that shaped their futures. While circumstances put these two men on opposite sides they really weren’t so different. They were both extremely successful in their own right, they achieved their goals at young ages; one an amazing inventor with the vision to make a better future and the other a driven business tycoon determined to come out on top. The Farnsworth Invention certainly has the potential to become a Broadway classic so be one of the first to experience this piece of American history. Purchase your tickets to guarantee your seats for this interesting addition to this season’s schedule.
