Talk Radio Broadway
SPELLBINDING DRAMA MAKES BROADWAY DEBUT!
Playwright Eric Bogosian’s powerful story of hate and its consequences hit Broadway this February at the Longacre Theatre. This suspenseful drama depicts a day in the life of provocative talk-show host Barry Champlain as his radio show is about to go nationwide. Talk Radio originally debut off-Broadway in 1987 and ran for six months at the Public Theater where it was an instant hit. The play is based loosely on the real-life 1984 murder of radio personality Alan Berg, a Denver, Colorado based liberal radio show host, who was gunned down in his driveway for views he expressed on the air.
This hard-hitting show takes the audience into the late night world of talk radio and into the lives and minds of the callers. On this one memorable night Champlain experiences a wide variety of callers and is able to offer his true feelings live on the air. His mesmerizing voice pushes his listeners to the edge. His cutting tongue and at times outrageous views are not always what the caller expects to hear. Syndication will either make this shock jock a star or an even bigger target. He is not only on the verge of becoming the next big thing, but quite possibly a nervous breakdown. He seems to be putting it all out there, but at what cost?
This current run marks the Pulitzer Prize nominated play’s Broadway debut. It stars Tony Award-winner Liev Schreiber in the role of Champlain. Schreiber won a 2005 Tony for his performance in Glengarry Glen Ross, and is notorious for his chilling role as accused serial killer Cotton Weary in the horror trilogy “Scream”. He has most recently appeared in an arc of episodes for the popular CBS crime drama CSI. The play was written by Eric Bogosian whose other works include “subUrbia” and “Red Angel”. Bogosian starred in the role of the host in the original production and again in the 1988 film version directed by Oliver Stone.
Talk Radio is on Broadway for a limited time and is currently scheduled to run through June. It puts a strong lead character in a situation where he may not be able to come back from. He will learn that some actions carry bigger consequences then others, and just because we can express our opinion doesn’t always mean we should. If you are a fan of talk radio in general then this just may be the show for you. It is an electrifying drama that will have you thinking long after you leave the theater.
Talk Radio Broadway tickets are selling on average for 45.00 dollars with premium and last minute seats selling for over 250.00. The Longacre Theatre has a seating capacity of 8,760 and Talk Radio Broadway tickets sell on average of 4,792.
