“South Pacific” is running at Vivian Beamont Theater. It opened on April 4, 2008. The musical has arrived after a gap of 60 long years. Its last performance was in April, 1949 at the Majestic Theater. It starred Mary Martin as Nellie Forbush and Ezio Pinza as Emile de Becque. South Pacific Theatre tickets were a popular event then and a much in demand Broadway ticket today!

It’s hard to forget the assertive claim of the young and enthusiast woman that she’s “as normal as blueberry pie.” Nellie, the character who managed to become a symbol of strength in the United States that was recovering from the injuries of World War II, casts magic on the audience then. This show produced a surge of power among the people of America.

After a successful performance at the Majestic Theater, “South Pacific” performed at Broadway Theater in the year 1953. Here, it made history by rendering 1,952 performances and running for 5 long years! It became the fifth longest running musicals on Broadway! South Pacific theatre tickets were very popular for Broadway at the time.

South Pacific Revived!

In 2005, “South Pacific” was revived as a concert at the Carnegie Hall. It was of two hour duration. It featured all the songs and had the complete musical score. The concert starred Reba McEntire as Nellie Forbush and Brain Stokes Mitchell as Emile de Becque. The supporting cast included Lillias White as Bloody Mary and Alec Baldwin as Luther Billis. In 2006, the concert version of this musical was telecast by PBS.

In the following year (2007), the UK tour of this musical opened at Blackpool Grand Theater. The tour is supposed to end at Cardiff New Theatre in July 2008. The tour starred Helena Blackman as Nellie Forbush and Dave Willetts as Emile de Becque. The producers of this UK show are Peter Frosdick and Martin Dodd. The director is Julian Woolford and choreographer is Chris Hocking.

The South Pacific Theatre musical has won a Pulitzer Prize for Drama and four Tony Awards. It has some marvelous numbers and awe inspiring performances by each artist onstage. The drama created in the eyes of the lovers when they meet amidst war is worth watching. This is not just a story of two people in love; it’s a story that unveils the harsh realities of war. It’s a story that lifts the lid from taboo topics like racism.

Such was the obvious portrayal of these topics that Oscar Hammerstein II and Richard Rodgers, creators of this musical, were asked by the original writer of the book, James A. Michener, to withdraw a song from the musical, as it was too thought provoking.

Most shows entertain through fiction. But, “South Pacific” is a show that entertains through reality. It has the charisma to enlighten you with the realities of war and, at the same time, give you a good time at the theater.
