Nederlander Theatre History

The Theatre was constructed from what had been an indoor tennis court on the edge of the theatre district. The building, which was named the National Theatre, opened in 1921 as a playhouse suitable for handling both straight plays and small-scale musicals. Although the theatre was somewhat removed from the center of the theatre district, it soon achieved recognition based on its ability to attract a number of outstanding productions including: “Grand Hotel”(1930), “Tonight at 8:30”(1936), “The Little Foxes”(1939),”The Corn is Green”(1940), “Call Me Mister”(1946), “Inherit the Wind”(1955), and “Once More With Feeling”(1958). Despite a name change to the Billy Rose Theatre in 1959, the theatre continued to attract top-notch productions such as “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?”(1962). Finally the theatre was renamed as the Nederlander in 1990, where the hit musical from Off-Broadway, “Rent” has been running strongly since 1996.

Gray and grim, the Nederlander’s nondescript façade fits right in with the neighboring buildings on 41st Street, which has functioned as a back alley for glitzy 42nd Street for almost 100 years. With an interior that doesn’t do much to brighten up the old house today’s Nederlander has proven to be brilliant setting for the popular “Rent”, a musical about New York’s new class of educated slum dwellers.
