The New York (NY) Islanders are based at the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum, commonly known as Nassau Coliseum. The Nassau Coliseum is a multi-purpose indoor arena and is also home to the New York Dragons team of the Arena Football League. The Islanders have been based at the Nassau Colisem since its beginnings in 1972. The 15,000 seat Arena was built on 63 acres of the Mitchel Field. The 1200 acres Mitchel Field was a former Army/Airforce base in Nassau County.

After having considered a number of proposals to build a central library, or a civic center, or a residential housing, it was decided to build a $32 million arena. The Nassau Coliseum opened in 1972. The Coliseum has hosted a number of events, such as state-of-the-art rock concerts, touring family shows, professional wrestling, boxing, track and field, lacrosse and soccer, among others. Not to mention hosting ice hockey games, being the home of the four consecutive Stanley Cup winners, from 1979-80 to 1982-83 – the New York Islanders.

The Islanders won their first Stanley Cup in the 1979-80 season, defeating the Philadelphia Flyers, 4-2. They followed up this feat by winning the following year too. They beat the Minnesota North Stars, 4-1. The third year, they repeated the feat and beat the Vancouver Canucks, 4-0, wining for the third time running. They repeated the feat for the fourth consecutive time by beating Edmonton Oilers, 4-0, during the 1982-83 season.

The home team of Nassau Coliseum has also won the Conference Championships and the Division Championships 6 times each. To honor the great players of the New York Islanders team, the Nassau Coliseum has the ‘retired numbers’ banners hanging from its rafters.

During the period from 1981 to 1984, the seating capacity of ther Arena was increased to 18,000, to accommodate the fans of the home team. The Nassau Coliseum is privately operated by SMG Management. The SMG Management also manages 74 arenas, 7 stadiums, and 51 convention centers, in addition to 34 performing arts centers, and 10 other recreational facilities. It grosses more than 1 billion dollars, each year.

Being a very old facility, no doubt, the acoustics are outdated, and sight lines are also obstructive, in places. However, the Nassau Coliseum is considered a very tough arena, especially for players from the opposing teams. The major problem is the intensity of the echoes of the crowd rooting for their home team.
