Catch That Mamet Magic With November Broadway
Schedules
Matinee: Wed & Sat 2pm Sun 3pm
Evening: Tues Through Sat 8pm
November Broadway is more than just a seasonal buzz of the theater season. The mere fact that it is a play by David Mamet is reason enough to attend the show. After all, he is one of the best playwrights in contemporary theater. But this particular play has far more going for it. Not only has Mamet forayed into the realm of political satire, but the play also boasts of some of the biggest names of stage and screen.
Politics Mamet-Style
The last time Mamet dipped his fingers in the theme of politics was with the immensely popular 'Wag The Dog', a movie which he co-wrote and featured Hollywood heavyweights Dustin Hoffman and Robert DeNiro. Since then, Mamet seems to have steered clear of political satire, barring his contributions to the Huffington Post. Given the current state of American politics, many people feel that it was just a matter of time before Mamet's November Broadway manifested itself.
The play deals with a single day in the life of a contemporary president. The second run of elections is coming up and the President must sift his way through a slew of issues including campaign contributions, American Indians, civil marriages and presidential pardons. As is Mamet's style, he blends a rich tapestry of comedy with the dark and disturbing aspects of politics in America. Added to this, is his signature style of dialogue delivery. All of Mamet's characters use language and dialogues in a cynical, hard edged manner that neatly portrays the way in which the language can be manipulated.
Lane And Laurie
While Mamet's name alone is enough to draw people to see November Broadway, another huge draw is the cast that has been brought together. Mamet has always had an informal set of star actors that he has often worked with for his major plays. These include big names like William Macy, Joe Montegna and Ricky Jay. This particular feature is no exception as the lead role of the president is being portrayed by none other than Nathan Lane.
Lane is certainly no stranger to stage. Not only is he a Tony award winner, but also has made a splash on television and on the big screen. Co-star Laurie Metcalf is a three time Emmy award winner, who first made a big impression with the hit sitcom ‘Roseanne’. She has been on other hit shows like ‘Absolutely Fabulous’, ‘Malcolm in the Middle’ and ‘Frasier’. She has also shown her dramatic acting abilities in the series ‘Desperate Housewives’.
The production is surely another feather in Mamet's cap and is eagerly awaited, given the current political scenario. Critics are waiting to see how deeply Mamet has sunk his teeth into contemporary politics with this piece. This marks his sixth Broadway production, two of which have been revivals. This play also marks Mamet's first world premiere at Broadway, so is set to be a special show.
