New York Giants

The New York Giants (NY Giants) is one of the three great American football teams of New York – the other being the New York Jets. Both are based at the MetLife Stadium in the massive Meadowlands Sports Complex in suburban East Rutherford, New Jersey. The Giants were one of the first five teams of the National Football League (NFL) in 1925, and the only one still in existence.

The Giants Stadium

Though today, the Giants Stadium is home to the NY Giants, this is the fifth Stadium they have called their home. When founded in 1925, the Giants had their base at the Polo Grounds, which they shared with the New York Baseball Giants team. They lost their first inaugural game at this ground in October 1925 to Frankford Yellow Jackets.

Their second home was the larger Yankee Stadium which they shifted at the start of the 1956 season. After playing the first two games of the 1973 season, the Giants shifted base to the Yale Bowl in New Haven, Connecticut, for the balance of the 1973 season and the 1974 season – as Yankee Stadium was closing down for massive renovations. After the 1974 season, the Giants moved back to New York, to make base at the Shea Stadium, where they played until the Giants Stadium opened on October 10, 1976.

After playing for the first 51 years (1925 – 1976) of their existence in four different stadiums, the NY Giants found their permanent home at Giants Stadium. The Giants Stadium is located in the massive Meadowlands Sports Complex. With a total seating capacity of 80,242, Giants Stadium is the second largest stadium in the NFL, behind FedEx Field (located in Landover, Maryland), which has a seating capacity of 91,704 people. In their inaugural game at the Giants Stadium on October 10, 1976, the Giants lost 24-14 to the Dallas Cowboys, in front of a sold-out crowd of 76,042 fans.

The professional American football team plays in the Eastern Division of the National Football Conference in the National Football league (NFL). The team is based in the metropolitan area of NYC, with their headquarters at the Stadium, in the massive Meadowlands Sports Complex in suburban East Rutherford, NJ. Tim Mara – a businessman, a bookie, and a promoter – founded the team, which became one of the first teams of the NFL, in 1925. The Giants were one of the five teams that joined the NFL that year and the only one still in existence.

1925 was the time of professional baseball, boxing, and college football; and professional football was played in places such as Dayton, Rochester, and Columbus. Professional football was introduced to NYC the same day the Giants were, and on that October afternoon in 1925, the Giants lost their inaugural game – at home – 14-0 to the Frankford Yellow Jackets. But . . . professional football had come to stay in NY.

Officially, the team is known as the New York Football Giants, to distinguish it from the professional baseball team by the same name. The Giants have several nicknames, such as Big Blue Wrecking Crew, Big Blue, G-Men, The Jints, The New York Football Giants, and Jersey Giants.

When the Giants first played in NY, they shared the Polo Grounds with the NY Baseball Giants. At the start of the 1956 season, they shifted base to the larger Yankee Stadium. 1973 was when the Giants decided to move to a new stadium in NJ. In the meantime, they played the first two games of the 1973 season at Yankee Stadium, which was then closing down, after the baseball season, for a two-year renovation. The rest of this season and the 1974 season were played at the Yale Bowl in New Haven, Connecticut. After the 1974 season, they moved back to NY, to the Shea Stadium, and played there until the opening of their Giants Stadium in 1976.

Of the six NFL titles that it won, the Giants won the four pre-merger NFL Championships in 1927, 1934, 1938, and 1956, and won two Super Bowls in 1986 and in 1990.
