Movin Out Basic Facts
Twyla Tharp created the new Broadway original Movin' Out, Twyla choreographed, and directed the play, based on 24 classic Billy Joel songs. The story is about six lifelong friends and the events of two decades of tough times.
Running time is 1 hour and 55 minutes with 1 intermission
Movin Out Storyline
Based in the heart of the 1960's Vietnam era and under the award winning direction of Twyla Tharp, Movin Out is based on the Billy Joel song catalog, the story tells of two decades of turbulent times for six lifelong friends.
The storyline continues the story from the Billy Joel classic "Scenes From An Italian Restaurant" in which "Brenda and Eddie were the popular steadies, And the king and the queen of the prom."
Now you get to see what happens to Brenda and Eddie as life moves on past those glory days, and the two young lovers and their friends enter adult life and all their problem which come along.
Movin out is basically a pure musical show, with little dialogue, the entire show is filled with brilliant dance in front of the great Billy Joel songs, Each song tells the story, as the actors dance and act out the scenes.
The idea from Twyla Tharp, with Billy Joel's permission, was to entwine a story of song and dance the the work of classic songs, to use each song and put them together to tell a story. Even though non of the songs are related and all tell a different story, starting with "Scenes From An Italian Restaurant" Tharp was able to continue the characters lives through other unrelated songs, but tie them together as if they were all written to tell one story. A brilliant fresh Broadway concept which has been rewarded in ticket sales, awards and critical review.
Movin out won 2 Tony award in 2003 for Best Choreography and Best Orchestrations
