Minskoff Theatre History
The Minskoff Theatre was built by Sam Minskoff and Sons, who also owned the high-rise building. Obviously the theatre is named after it's original owners and creators, the actual theatre is located on the third floor of the 55 story building. the high rise is in the location of the old Broadway Astor Hotel. The modern venue hosts a very large seating capacity of 1,621 with a Proscenium stage type, which was designed by the architectural firm Kahn and Jacobs. Designed to offer great views through it's glass windows on every level. The Minskoff offers many great comfort options that other theaters do not have, for example there is an actual arcade within the theater, along with a large lobby. escalators take the patrons to the 3rd floor where the theatre is located. There is large concessions as well as some bars which offer food and drink to the audience.
The theatre itself is a very original design, not as lavish as other Broadway theaters, but with it's large seating and spacious design, as well as the fact you must head up 35 feet to enter the theater area, creates an atmosphere which other venues simply cannot offer. The simple design and decor still hold true and keep the Minskoff a classic traditional New York theatre. Offering large and comfortable seating with excellent viewing from any section or level.
The Minks is a more modern theatre which offers some innovative design concepts, such as the flies of the stage being on the upstage wall instead of the side wall, allowing the stage to extend out. Every part of the theatre is large and comfortable, from the dressing rooms to the restrooms.
The Minskoff officially opened on March 13, 1973 the opening production was a revival of the 1919 musical "Irene" in which George S. Irving won a Tony Award for his performance, Irene had a run at the Minskoff until the final curtain in 1974. The venue still today hosts some of the more classic musical revivals under the direction of James M. Nederlander. Currently "Fiddler On The Roof" has enjoyed it's time at the Minskoff. The Lion King has moved into the Minskoff and Lion King Show tickets are currently on sale.
