In The Heights
This hip new musical had a successful off-Broadway run before coming to Broadway. The show is scheduled to begin previews at the Richard Rodgers Theatre on February 14, 2008 with an official start date of March 9, 2008. From the producers of Rent and Avenue Q comes In the Heights a modern musical that portrays a close community on the verge of change while incorporating hip hop, salsa and Broadway ballads to deliver its message. In the Heights details three days in the life of Washington Heights a colorful, tight-knit community at the top of the island of Manhattan. Through the music the story develops and the audience is able to feel the hopes and dreams of three Latino generations as they try to establish an identity for themselves in a neighborhood on the brink of transition. When the community finds themselves at a crossroad they must stick together to try and achieve their dreams no matter the cost. Heading up the cast of twenty-two in the role of Usnavi is Lin-Manuel Miranda who not only stars in the production but also serves as the composer and lyricist as well. He is the founding member of the hip hop troupe Freestyle Love Supreme and this production marks his Broadway debut. In the role of the maternal figure Camila is Tony award winning actress and stage veteran Priscilla Lopez. Ms. Lopez originated the role of Diana in the 1975 production of A Chorus Line. She won a Tony award in 1980 for Best Featured Actress in a Musical for A Day in Hollywood/A Night in the Ukraine. She was last seen on Broadway in the critically-acclaimed 2003 production of Anna in the Tropics and will appear in the upcoming film version of the long-running off-Broadway hit Tony ‘n’ Tina’s Wedding. While playing off-Broadway the show was nominated for the 2007 Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Music and Outstanding Lyrics and won the 2007 Outer Critics Circle and Lucille Lortel Awards for Outstanding Musical. It also won the 2007 Theatre World Award for Outstanding Debut. This show is already receiving awards and praise and it hasn’t even taken the Broadway stage by storm yet. In the Heights is a fresh, innovative take on a Broadway musical. The choreography is extremely original and the score and lyrics are unique and do a great job of telling a truly moving tale.
