Drowsy Chaperone Tickets
The show is a highly funny show, a comedy with a musical background. It is a story of a pampered starlet on Broadway, who wants to give up show business and get married. It is a story of her producer who goes about sabotaging her marriage. And then, there is a martini swigging and strutting chaperone, played superbly by Beth Leavel. The story also has the debonair groom, the ditzy chorine, the Latin lover, and a couple of gangsters, all together in the comic caldron.
The Drowsy Chaperone is the first successful musical from Canada in the last 26 years, and the second after Baker Street. The three other musicals from Canada that have made it to the stages of Broadway - Rockabye Hamlet, Billy Bishop Goes to War, and Anne of Green Gables are not considered Broadway productions as none made past a two-week run.
The Drowsy Chaperone opened at the Nederlander Organization owned and operated Marquis Theatre on May 1, 2006, after 32 previews, and until January 14, 2007, has had 296 well-acclaimed and successful performances. Nominated for 13 Tony Awards, the Casey Nicholaw directed and choreographed musical won five:
Book of a Musical,
Score (Music and/or Lyrics)
Actress (Featured Role - Musical),
Scenic Design (Musical), and
Costume Design (Musical).
In addition, the musical has won seven 2006 Drama Desk Awards, four Outer Circle Critics Awards 2006, and The NY Drama Critics Circle Award for Best Musical.
This small musical is a spoof of a 1920s song-and-dance frolic, and though not a masterpiece in any form, is destined to be appreciated all over by the regulars on Broadway.
The music, the lyrics, the dancing, the jokes, the sets, and the costumes are outstanding, and the people who have seen it highly recommend it. In fact, many wonder why this fresh air of a musical comedy did not win more Tonys! Many consider this well written musical with wonderful music and songs the best they have seen in a long time on Broadway. They come out raving from the theater.
The Theater
Five theaters Astor, Gaiety, the Helen Hayes, Morosco, and the Bijou - were razed to the ground, to build the Marriot Marquis Hotel, which has the Marquis Theater on its third floor. The Theatre, which is being operated by the Nederlander Organization on a 35-year lease, opened on July 9, 1986.
The Theatre is modern, spacious, state-of-the-art, etc etc, but does not impress the traditionalists who go in for old style Broadway theaters. Though deep inside the Hotel building, the box office of the Marquis Theatre is accessible easily from the Broadway side of the hotel.
